Two new xanthones, gartanin and 8-desoxygartanin, have been isolated from very ripe fruits of Garcinia mangostana and their structures have been shown to be VIIa and X tespectively. Partially ripe fruits contain only mangostin and ß-mangostin. The structural similarity of 8-desoxygartanin to the acridone alkaloid atalaphylline is discussed
