Optimal temperature profiles for nylon 6 polymerization in plug-flow reactors have been obtained with end-point constraints involving the degree of polymerization and the cyclic dimer concentration, using the most recent kinetic information. Computations suggest that the temperature at the feed end of the reactor must be maintained close to the highest permissible level (determined by the boiling point of the ε-caprolactam). The temperatures in this region control the degree of polymerization more than other variables. Thereafter, the temperature should be reduced.
