The export of carbon through the biological pump from the surface to the deep ocean has a direct influence on the removal of CO<SUB>2</SUB> from the atmosphere. This is because the carbon is sequestered for only a few days to months in the surface while the carbon removed from the surface to deep waters takes hundreds of years to re-enter the atmosphere. The highest dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) is expected in the deep waters of the North Pacific due to longer age of waters. On contrary, the higher deep water DIC is found in the northern Indian Ocean than elsewhere in the World Oceans.
