Flow study around an aircraft’s wing with (and without) wing tip device for several models

The aim of this project is to study the wing tip vortices, its preventions implemented until now and introduce a new design. The aerodynamic performance analyzation of the Airbus A320’s wing with and without wing tip devices was carried out. Winglets are being used to have a bigger aspect ratio of the wing because it will help to reduce the induced drag caused by vortices. This unwanted swirling effect is created by the pressure imbalance at the wing tip, where higher pressure of the lower surface meets the lower pressure of the upper surface. A solution to this inconvenience, is the design of the winglets which is able to reduce the induced drag. The airfoils design plays an important role in the aerodynamic efficiency of a wing. Therefore, several NACA airfoils were selected in order to compare their behaviour and the models chosen are: NACA0009, NACA0012, NACA2411, NACA4412 and NACA6412. These airfoils gone through flow simulation in ANSYS FLUENT. After analysing them at several angles of attack, CL/CD ratios were compared to nominate the best airfoil. The results of CFD simulations confirms that NACA6412 is the best aerodynamically performed airfoil to be used for A320’s wing construction. The wing was modelled in Solidworks without and with wing tip devices as Sharklet, Wingtip Fence, Feathered Wingtip (new concept) and Raked Wingtip. In order to obtain the Lift force and Drag force the use of Solidworks Flow Simulation was needed. These different wing configurations were studied again in different angles of attack to examine their aerodynamic performance. The best winglet model increases the ratio between CL and CD decreasing the wing tip vortices which will be pointed out at the end of the project.El objetivo de este proyecto es estudiar los vórtices producidos en la punta del ala, las prevenciones implementadas hasta ahora e introducir un nuevo diseño. Se ha efectuado el análisis del comportamiento aerodinámico de un ala de Airbus A320. Los Winglets, o dispositivos de punta de ala, son usados para aumentar la relación de aspecto del ala porque de este modo se conseguirá reducir la resistencia inducida generada por vórtices. El efecto torbellino es creado por la diferencia de presión en la punta del ala, donde la presión alta de la superficie inferior coincide con la presión baja de la superficie superior. La solución a esta inconveniencia es el descubrimiento de Winglets que ayudan a reducir los vórtices. El diseño del perfil alar juega un papel importante en la eficiencia aerodinámica de un ala. Por lo tanto, se han seleccionado varios perfiles NACA para comparar sus comportamientos aerodinámicos, que son los siguientes: NACA0009, NACA0012, NACA2411, NACA4412 and NACA6412. Para simular los perfiles NACA se ha utilizado el simulador de flujos ANSYS FLUENT. Una vez son analizados para diferentes ángulos de ataque, se comparan la ratio entre el coeficiente de sustentación, Cl, y el coeficiente de resistencia, Cd para nombrar el mejor perfil alar. Los resultados del simulador de CFD confirman que NACA6412 es el que presenta mejor comportamiento aerodinámico para la construcción del ala de A320. El ala fue modelado en Solidworks con y sin dispositivos de punta de ala como, Sharklet, Wing Tip Fence, Feathered Wingtip (nuevo concepto) y Raked Wingtip. Para obtener la fuerza de sustentación y la fuerza de Resistencia se ha utilizado Solidworks Flow Simulation. Estas diferentes configuraciones de ala son estudiadas para diferentes ángulos de ataque para examinar su comportamiento aerodinámico. El mejor modelo de dispositivo de punta de ala incrementa la ratio entre el Cl y el CD disminuyendo los vórtices generados en la punta de ala que se verá al final de este proyecto
