Improvement of End-to-end Simulator for spaceborne GNSS-R Instrument

The GNSS-R technique has been in development for many years, and it has presented an opportunity to make measurements of soil characteristics. The applications it has are enormous, from measuring the ocean winds, to check the soil moisture or surface roughness, even checking the layout of a big ice bodies. The GARCA simulator will be used to know to what extent what it is known about models and also ground and airborne experiments on GNSS-R applications for soil moisture and vegetation biomass is still applicable from space. Its purpose is also to try to discover if there is any additional phenomenon that should be modelled and which geo-physical characteristics affect our measurements. In order to validate the GARCA simulator its results must be compared to actual and real data and for that, the TDS-1 project has been selected. The TechDemoSat-1 GNSS-Reflectometry Ground Processing Project is a project sponsored by the ESA to have a series of technology satellites aiming to provide rapid and affordable means of testing up to date space hardware directly in orbit. This project uses the TDS-1 L1b data obtained directly from the Merrbys website, and also the GARCA simulator to make all the validations. The structure of this project starts with an introduction to GNSS-R, how it works and its applications. Then an introduction to the TDS-1 project in both a hardware point of view and a data-focused point of view. Finally the last chapter will focus on the GARCA simulator and the validation of a series of simulations that have been performed to test different aspects of such program.El GNSS-R ha estat en desenvolupament per molts anys, I ha presentat una oportunitat de fer mesures de característiques del terra. Les aplicacions que té són enormes, des de mesurar els vents als oceans, a mesurar la humitat o la rugositat del terra, fins i tot serveix per estudiar l’interior de grans masses de gel. El simulador GARCA s’utilitza per saber fins a quin punt tot el que sabem de models, experiments a terra o al aire de aplicacions del GNSS-R per a la humitat del terra i la vegetació es pot aplicar des de l’espai. El seu objectiu és també descobrir si hi han fenòmens addicionals que haurien de ser modelats, i com les característiques geofísiques del terra afecten a les mesures realitzades. Per poder validar el simulador GARCA, els seus resultats han de ser comparats amb dades actuals i reals, i per això s’ha seleccionat el projecte TDS-1 EL TechDemoSat-1 GNSS-Reflectometry Ground Processing Project és un projecte patrocinat per la ESA amb l’objectiu de tenir una sèrie de satèl·lits de tecnologia que serveixen per proporcionar una manera de testejar hardware directament en òrbita. Aquest projecte utilitza les dades L1b del TDS-1 obtingudes directament a la web MERRByS, i també el simulador GARCA per fer les validacions. La estructura del projecte comença amb una introducció a lo que és el GNSS-R, com funciona i quines són les seves aplicacions. Finalment l’últim capítol es centra en el simulador GARCA i les validacions de una sèrie de simulacions que s’han realitzat amb diferents característiques per veure com de bé funciona el simulador
