The rapid development of 3D computer graphics and virtual environments has allowed the researchers to avoid working with physical robotic systems. These require specialised knowledge, a very complex construction, a huge time-consuming and it may not be financially feasible. Therefore, an alternative approach would be to use robot simulations which allow researchers to carry out experiments on the computer. Ideally one would first prototype a robot, then controls its algorithms in a simulation and, as a third step, the learned parameters and results could be transferred to the real hardware implementation of the robot arm.
