Algae are an important part of exploited marine resources of our planet. 21 million tons of fresh seaweed are collected each year in the world with a value of $ 5.5 trillion. 75% of this production takes place in Asian countries like China, Korea and Japan and is primarily based in food industry, the most common genera are Laminaria (Kombu), Undaria (Wakame) and Porphyra (Nori).
