Satellite networks are expected to become an integral part of upcoming 5G systems. In this regard, the adoption of 5G mainstream softwarisation technologies such as Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) arises as a necessary step in the evolution of satellite ground segment systems (e.g. satellite gateways and terminals). This softwarisation would allow satellite communications services to be delivered in a more flexible, agile and cost-effective manner than done today.
