This paper proposes a novel Cross-Layer optimization mechanism for WLAN systems and analyses its performance in terms of throughput and mean packet delay. The proposed scheme makes use of a MAC-PHY interaction and a nearoptimum distributed MAC to improve radio channel utilisation. The proposed technique allows the MAC layer to improve the system efficiency by means of certain PHY information knowledge. Simulation results show that the obtained benefits are quite remarkable so the proposed scheme is feasible to be introduced in future wireless communication systems.Peer Reviewe
