Die finnische Soziologie kann durch ihre Haupttraditionen - sozialanthropologische und ethnologische Forschung etwa seit 1890, konkrete, sozialstatistische, sozialhistorische, positivistische Forschung und Forschung auf der Grundlage des Historischen Materialismus - und durch ihre Aufteilung auf drei akademische Fächer - Allgemeine Soziologie, Sozialpsychologie und Sozialpolitik gekennzeichnet werden. In dieser Darstellung werden beide Aspekte berücksichtigt.
