Der Aufsatz untersucht die in der soziologischen Diskussion bislang nur wenig thematisierte Kopplungsbeziehung von Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft. Es wird argumentiert, dass mit systemtheoretischen Mitteln die Rolle von Organisationen und Interorganisationsnetzwerken in Prozessen technologischer Innovation präziser konzeptualisiert werden kann als in der evolutorischen Ökonomik bzw. dem Ansatz nationaler Innovationssysteme. Im Zentrum der Leistungsbeziehung zwischen Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft stehen wissensbasierte Technologien. Anhand makrostatistischer Indikatoren (Publikationen, Patente, Wertschöpfung) kann das Konzept der strukturellen Kopplung am Beispiel der Biotechnologie veranschaulicht werden.
