Joaquin Sama was a founding member and shareholder of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza (ILE). This article presents part of the most relevant aspects of his professional and personal life. The ILE, founder Giner de los Ríos and his collaborators, such as Joaquin Sama, played a fundamental role in the cultural and scientific revolution that Spain lived in the late 19th and early 20th century, despite having ceased to be a global power. Sama was the educational director of the ILE from 1885 until his death in 1895, at a time in which the institution had the greatest drive.
