This article deals with the acquisition of the position of the negative marker no with respect to the verb in Catalan and Spanish. The alternation in the early data between preverbal and postverbal negation suggests that what children initially do is to explore all the options allowed by the parameters of UG. Once children acquire the feature or features relevant for the parameter setting, the parameter becomes steadily set, and the chosen value coincides with that of the adult language. Following Zanuttini (1991), it is shown that the acquisition of the notion of tense and its corresponding functional category (TP) is responsible for the setting of the parameter associated to Neg.
