The huge amount of user-generated content produced in Web 2.0 needs structures if this content should be used in a meaningful way. Folksonomies are a breed of the Web for indexing digital resources with free user-generated tags, which is both beneficial and risky at the same time. This paper deals with the basic concepts of folksonomies and discusses their pros and cons for knowledge representation purposes. Moreover, it is shown how libraries can use folksonomies in their daily work
