Thesauri as essential tools in the description and recovery of electronic documents are presented. The different types of relationships established between terms in a thesaurus are analyzed. These relationships allow to optimize information retrieval in bibliographic databases, both those using controlled terms or not. Equivalence relations are presented as a mean to fight the "document silence" and the relations of hierarchy and association as a way to help to expand queries. The need for changes in information retrieval softwares, in order thesauri are completely integrated in the search, is advocated
