This work seeks to analyse how Internet becomes a means through which Virtual Communities arise, as an evolution of the traditional concept of community. Concerning web portals their main characteristics and services are studied. The authors conclude about the importance of applying documentation techniques to Virtual Communities projects, and the usefulness of community models for the diffusion of information in our institutions
