Modern management theories assume that organizations are open systems exposed to strong influence of the environment. Continuous change of the environment makes it possible for the organizations to survive and develop only if they adapt to the changing needs. Therefore many new conceptions concerning work organization and management techniques have been formulated. A discussion on them started in library management as well. One of the most important is the conception of the learning organization (LO) considered to be the model of the future organization. More than other conceptions it focuses on the enlargement and use of knowledge treated as the source of innovation and the factor decreasing uncertainty and the permanent learning continues. In the paper the essence and the assumptions of the learning organization are discussed. The creation of the learning organization cannot be separated from other management methods and thus some common features with other management conceptions are shown. Some definitions treat the concept of learning organisation as synonymous with the intelligent one but we adopt the view that it is a mixture of a traditional and intelligent one. We try to answer the question if the learning organisation will remain a theoretical model for libraries or a practical solution to the problems of the present day
