Web indicators can be used for measuring both the formal and informal scholarly communication. They are especially suited for describing the academic activity at the level of institutions and organizations. results published by several authors showed a positive correlation with other bibliometric-based indicators, suggesting that both techniques could be used jointly for describing and evaluating research activities. Current web data suggest there is an important digital divide that only can be solved with a generalized adoption of the Open Access initiatives
