This thesis explores the fictionalization of the Brontës by focusing on their cultural significance during the interwar period, when members of the family were first appropriated as characters in works of drama, poetry, and prose fiction. This interwar fictionalization occurred in England and the United States, where the family was widely discussed in journalism, fiction, and literary criticism. Yet, the process of their fictionalization began in the mid-nineteenth century, almost simultaneously with the sisters’ second foray into print with the publications of Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and Agnes Grey.
