Reliability of meteoroid streams identification methods

Analizą skupień wykorzystaną przez Southwortha i Hawkinsa w pracy z 1963 roku była metoda pojedynczego łączenia. Natomiast Sekanina (1976) i Welch (2001) zaproponowali iteracyjną metodę. Całkowicie inną metodę, tzw. metodę wskaźników, zaproponowali Svoreň i in. (2000). Podczas gdy Galligan i Baggaley (2002) oraz Brown i in. (2008) zdefiniowali strumień meteoroidowy, wykorzystując metody falkowe. Celem niniejszej pracy była ocena wiarygodności metod identyfikacji strumieni meteoroidowych, w których wykorzystano funkcje podobieństwa orbitalnego DSH i DV oraz kilka algorytmów analizy skupień. Badania wykonano w oparciu o symulacje wyrzutu i ewolucji cząstek strumieni meteoroidowych pochodzących z 15 ciał macierzystych, które identyfikowano za pomocą algorytmów analizy skupień: dwóch wariantów algorytmu Welcha, metody pojedynczego łączenia i metody wskaźników.The meteoroid stream identification algorithms are based on appropriately selected componets (meteoroid parameters, similarity function, threshold and cluster analysis method), which define the stream itself. The most commonly and widely used similarity function is the orbital D-criterion introduced by Southworth and Hawkins (1963). Meantime other criterions have been presented in the literature (Drummond 1981, Jopek 1993, Jopek et al. 1999, Jenniskens 2008), while the most recent one is defined in the domain of the vectorial heliocentric orbital elements Jopek et al. 2006. Additionally, we need to choose a suitable similarity threshold, Dc - a minimal value that allows us to explicitly imply the orbital similarity of compared objects. Having both, the distance function and the similarity threshold a meteoroid stream can be detected by a suitable cluster analysis algorythm. There are many cluster analysis algorithms: iterative method (Sekanina 1976, Welch 2001) single neighbour linking technique (Southworth & Hawkins 1963, Lindblad 1981), method of indices (Svoreň et al. 2000), wavelet transform technique (Galligan & Baggaley, 2002, Brown et al. 2008).The aim of present work is an assessment of reliability of various identification methods. For this purpose we use the artificially generated set of meteoroid streams mixed with the sporadic background
