Media treatment during the referendum about Independence in Scotland 2014 in the British and Scottish press

Curs acadèmic 2015-2016En esta investigación se estudia el tratamiento que hizo la prensa de referencia escocesa y británica, sobre el proceso de independencia escocés en el periodo previo del referéndum del 18 de septiembre de 2014 en sus noticias. Su objetivo principal es averiguar el desarrollo de la perspectiva periodística ofrecida a diversos temas considerados de especial relevancia en este análisis. De este modo, hemos realizado un análisis del discurso escogiendo tres periodos temporales de especial relevancia para este proceso, el inicio oficial de la campaña del referéndum (26 de mayo de 2014), el primer debate televisivo de la BBC entre ambos líderes de la campaña: Alex Salmond y Alistair Darling (5 de agosto de 2014) y el día de la votación del referéndum (18 de septiembre de 2014). La muestra está integrada por cuatro periódicos de diferente ideología y territorio: The Daily Mail, The Daily Telegraph (británicos conservadores); The Daily Record y The Herald (escoceses liberales). Con ello, hemos podido demostrar como resultados que ni la ideología de los medios de comunicación ni su ubicación geográfica afecta al posicionamiento que tienen sobre la independencia, sino que este enfoque viene fijado por la línea e intereses económicos que tienen los grupos mediáticos a los que pertenecen.This paper analyses the treatment of the independence movement in Scotland during the previous months before the referendum of the 18th of September 2014 made by some of the most important British and Scottish newspapers. The main objective is to find out the development of journalistic approach given to some issues, considered relevant to understand the referendum. In order to do this, we have done a critic speech analysis. We have studied three moments of particular significance for this process, the oficial start of the referéndum campaign (26th of May 2014), the first televised debate on BBC between the two leaders of the campaigns: Alex Salmond and Alistair Darling (5th of August 2014) and the day of the ballot of the referendum for the Independence of Scotland (18th of September 2014). The sample is integrated of four newspapers with different ideologies and locations: The Daily Mail, The Daily Telegraph (British conservative); The Daily Record y The Herald (Scottish liberals). With this, we have demonstrated as a result that neither the ideology of the media and its geographic location affects the positioning they have on independence, but this approach is set by the line and economic interests of the media groups that they belong
