This study explores the nature of mentoring in a practical preservice teacher project. As part of an early childhood/primary teaching course, students attended weekly playgroups for preschool children and families, in some separate sites within the community. Small groups of preservice teachers worked alongside a mentor as they took responsibility for planning and implementing the program. The research was initiated as there was little known about the way mentors approached their role in this program and there was no information regarding the impact of mentoring on student learning during the program.
