This paper tackles a perennial conundrum for English teachers: ‘Why teach poetry?’ In particular our aim is to identify whether there is a connection between the study of poetry in the senior years of secondary school, and the development of students’ skills in communication. The focus here is on critical appraisal, responding to and writing about poetry rather than teaching students specifically to write poetry
