Att invandra sent i livet : En studie om copingstrategier hos sent-i-livet invandrare från Bosnien-Hercegovina

The aim of this study was to examine how seniors with Bosnian & Hercegovinan ethnicity handled the challenges that occurred in their migration to Sweden after the Bosnian war. It also focuses on the analysis of coping strategies that have been seen as important to this group, and also show how their age affected this process, provided by their respective context and circumstances. Six interviews that were held shows a pattern that determined the following results. To begin, the strategies that applied were emotional and problem based coping mechanisms. Emotion-based coping implies surrounding themselves with family and activities that offer a spirit and sense of mindfulness. Problem based coping was the next one, which meant learning the Swedish language, joining the labour and job market, avoiding a negative attitude and as a result, being actively positive. Age, on the other hand, became an obstacle or a relief. For those who wanted to integrate themselves into the Swedish community, it was an obstacle. On the other hand, for those who wanted to retreat and assimilate into their own ethnic group, it was a relief
