This study aims to explain the structure and content of Swedish city centres. The distribution and density of commercial activities in the cities are analysed with network constrained methods (Kernel density estimation, Ripley’s K-function and centrality measures) in GIS-programs. External shopping centres and economic theories are used as a benchmark against which city centres are compared. The study shows that the larger cities better satisfy the criteria set up for an optimal marketplace. However, all cities included in the study have room for improvement in different ways.
