Global warming is one of the greatest challenges of our time. To globally reduce green house gas emissions, the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) was created under the Kyoto Protocol. The mechanism allows industrialized nations in the Global North to meet their emission reduction targets under the Kyoto protocol, by purchasing carbon credits generated from CDM projects implemented in developing countries. CDM projects are to contribute to local sustainable development in the host country. This research explores the impacts of a CDM afforestation project to local communities in Uganda.
