Farliga Malmö, en medieprodukt? En kritisk diskursanalys av fem nyhetskällors rapportering om brottsligheten i Malmö gentemot brottsstatistiken.

Media has a great influence on our everyday life, where they report on a daily basis about news from all around the society we live in. With the help of their stories we create our own realities and truths. Media decides to write about incidents that has a public interest, however there is also an underlying thought of economic interest. Malmö has long been seen as a dangerous city with a high crime rate, and has been described with expressions as “little Chicago” and “gangster city”. Is this the true description of Malmö or is it a constructed reality that media has created? By using Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of discourse as a theory and method we have analysed five articles from the biggest media sources in Sweden. We also used moral panic and Foucault’s theory of power as tools in explaining medias description of Malmö. Statistic of how many articles that is written by the different media units of the cities Malmö and Stockholm has been used to complement the the analysis of the articles. The statistic of the written articles has then been compared to the statistic of the total amount of all reported crimes in each city to compile how much of the reported crimes that has been reported in media compared to the crime statistics. The conclusion of the essay is that media has a tremendous power that can shape a reality that becomes the truth of the people in a society and that the media reports slightly more about Malmö than Stockholm in comparison to the statistic of the total amount of all reported crimes
