Ett eller flera samtal? En studie om besökare vid familjerådgivningen

The aim of this study was to examine whether visitors to family counseling intended to go to one or more sessions of counseling and whether the expectations and experiences of the first session affect the visitors intention. It was a quantitative study that consisted of two parts, a survey and a structured interview. The participants in the survey answered the survey before their first counseling session. The structured interview was performed by telephone shortly after the first counseling session. During a period of five weeks, 72 first-time visitors at the family counseling clinic in Lund was asked to participate in the study. 52 visitors accepted participation in the study and subsequently answered the survey. 49 respondents answered the structured interview. The majority, 84 % of the visitors had the intention to go to more than one session. Their intention was the same before and after the first session. Two subgroups where identified. One group with only one person who before the first session intended to go to several sessions but after the first session did not want to attend more sessions. The second subgroup consisted of seven visitors who before the first session intended to go to only one session, but following the first session wanted to return for more sessions. Binary logistic regression and Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to perform statistical analysis on what factors had affected the second subgroup into wanting to participate in more sessions. Only a few statistical significant factors were found. This indicated that it is probably not factors in the counseling session that affects whether the visitors intend to go to one or more sessions, but rather factors outside the counseling
