Backup heating for passive houses. This paper consists of information and calculations considering the possibility for the passive houses in Björka 16:1 in north Helsingborg to be heated by district heating, heat pump or an electric boiler. This paper can be used as an inspiration for future projects considering passive houses, as the market for such houses is tiny in Sweden today. Helsingborgshem has the intention of building 36 houses with district heating as the chosen heating system. With this in mind this paper investigates differences between district heating and the other systems as alternatives. The main thought behind this work was to by rough calculations and assumptions make a weighted average cost of investment and show which system works best out of an economic point of view. This paper also brings up relevant facts considering management of the different systems and the problems they may cause for the tenant. Additionally, there is an interview with Patrik Håkansson who worked with the passive houses in Glumslöv to investigate if there is anything of interest to consider from previous experiences. Patrik explained the tennants role inte the functionallity of passive houses. If the tennant doesn’t understand the principle behind passive houses it’s probable that they won’t work as they should and need more external heating than intended. Calculations led to show that district heating is not the best economically suited system for a neighborhood with such low energyneeds. A heat pump was the better economical alternative over a longer span of time. It is however up to the involved parties to choose the heating system as all systems have their own good and bad points to them.
