The purpose of this study and the overall question was to find reasons why individuals become overindebted. The main method has been record research. Application forms from 60 individuals regarding debt adjustment have been examined and analyzed. Functionalistic and marxistic theories have been used to achieve an overall understanding for the phenomenon. On a concrete level, theories by Peter Dellgran and Per Arne Tufte have mainly been used. The result pointed out that consumption, investments in business/companies and housing were the main reasons to become overindebted. The results also showed that most of the overindebted individuals explained their problematic economic situation to dramatic life events as broken relations, unemployment...
