La mujer Nicaragüense

The aim of this essay was to illustrate how poor women with children in Nicaragua saw themselves and the role they played. For the realization of this study I used the qualitative method consisted in interviews of six women who live in a poor neighborhood in the city of León. To be able to reach this essay’s purpose, it was of the utmost importance to answer on what was their role, what conceptions of being a woman were of their own, how the relationship with the family and the surrounding looked like, what impact economy and having children had on their roles and what thoughts they had about education and the future. The results show that women who have children first define themselves as mother and housekeeper. Those who have a partner saw it as their task, not only to take care of the children, but also their husbands. Caring for their children, their husbands, housekeeping and looking after the family’s economical resources, are their priorities. The women in this essay did never or seldom put themselves as individual, before other family members. They saw their roles as important for the survival of the entire family. Concerning the future, the study shows that even there the most important was the progress of the children and therefore all the energy from the parents/women was devoted on that
