Abstract Author: TeodoraDidova Title: Art therapy Supervisor: Anna Angelin The purpose of this study was to examine art therapy as a treatment. In this work I focus on educated therapists own experiences of the issue. My questions was 1) what justifies the different ways of using art therapy, 2) what distinguish art therapy compared to conventional therapy 3) how can art therapy give people tolls to increase the power over their lives, according to the art therapists statements and 4) eventual shortcoming with the art therapy as a treatment. I interviewed seven art therapists and used the salutogenes perspective, Sense of Coherence (SoC)and empowerment to analyze the collected material. 1) The salutugenic perspective vas very important because it was about the meaning of life. Our respondents said that it suits to work cognitively when clients are able to change there life and have self-reflective character. There should be a variety of different kinds of art therapy. 2) Art therapists appreciate that the client does not feel singled out because focus is on the artwork. The picture can be handled in different ways – the client can throw it, paint over it, lock it and this has a symbolic significance. The painting can also works as a proof of what the client has been going through. Thoughts and feelings end up outside the client himself. By being in the flow during art therapy reduces the client’s anxiety. 3) The Sense of Coherence (SoC)helps the clients to understand and managetheir live and to regain the feeling that life is worthliving. Empowerment in art therapybringscreativity and means action. Empowermentevengivesawareness to the clientabour the own situation. 4) The main short coming is the lack of proper research in the field. Also the fact that art therapists are unable to get the professional certification was mentioned by several respondents. I found out that art therapy can be use on everybody. I find out also that therapists interpret the client’s picture even if they say it is wrong. However they do not interpret in a rigid way.
