This has been studied through an analysis of how professional social workers, that work with young people, look at the prob-lem of suicide among adolescents, self harm and what the professionals are doing to handle this. We have conducted a qualitative study with six semi-structured interviews. In this study we have used individualization theory in order to analyze our material. Some of our conclu-sions were that the increasing individualization of society and lack of adult presence in the lives of young people can contribute to mental ill-health. It was also found in the study that in all arenas there were differences between the sexes. Key words: mental ill-health, adolescent, suicide, self-harm, individualization
