According to the Swedish National Food Administration, artificially recharged water must stay in the ground for at least 14 days in order to be classified as groundwater. In September November 1996, a tracer test was conducted in the part of the esker Strömsholmsåsen which runs through Hallstahammar, Västmanland. The purpose of the test was to decide the duration of staying of artificially recharged water. The water, which is taken from a closely situated river, is infiltrated in the esker and taken out from a well 800 meters further south. As a tracer, granulated sodiumchloride was used and the tracer method was conductivity measuring. The tracer test showed that the artificially recharged water stays in the ground for approximately 55 day...
