The 5th generation (5G) ongoing standardization work is focusing on the design of a high performance radio access network (RAN) able to overcome the limitations of existing standards and supporting specific radio services required on the network. The 5G RAN is designed to support distributed architecture where some of the core network functions are moved to base stations which become more autonomous and allow signal processing split between several units for a flexible deployment.Data transmission to these remote units may be performed using multiple technologies.
