La répétition des crises de migraine entraine une plasticité neuronale inadaptée et conduit à la chronicisation de la maladie. La sensibilisation des réseaux de la douleur joue un rôle important dans la transition vers les formes chroniques de la migraine. Il est reconnu que les astrocytes sont activés dans le noyau spinal caudal du trijumeau (Sp5C) en réponse à une lésion du tissu périphérique et sont impliqués dans la sensibilisation centrale.
