Le brownout est un nuage de sable soulevé par le souffle du rotor de l'hélicoptère en milieu désertique. Ce nuage peut être épais de plusieurs dizaines de mètres et atténue, voire annule, la visibilité du pilote. Une solution est d'embarquer sur l'aéronef un système d'imagerie qui permettrait de visualiser la zone d'atterrissage à travers ce nuage de sable. Un tel système doit présenter des propriétés particulières. L'onde doit pouvoir pénétrer à travers le milieu diffusant et apporter une résolution suffisante pour détecter des obstacles.
