From the production of space to the construction of identity: an urban study of the centrums of Rinkeby, Tensta and Husby = De la producción del espacio a la construcción de identidad: un estudio de la vida urbana en los ‘centrums’ de Rinkeby, Tensta y Husby (Estocolmo)

Acknowledging the divide between the central city and its suburbs, the Stockholm Municipality has set inclusion at the core of its objectives for the city with its “Vision 2040: A Stockholm for Everyone”. This research focuses on three of the most stigmatized neighbourhoods of Stockholm: Rinkeby, Tensta, and Husby, where residents are predominantly of foreign background, to offer an alternative way of understanding inclusion, looking into the public spaces at the centre of these three neighbourhoods in a comparative and multi-methodological analysis of public life and its relationship to the morphology of the space that hosts it. The project presented here seeks to uncover the importance of these centrums in supporting community life in the suburbs, through different layers of analysis, from the objective to the subjective, like spatial analysis, direct observation and people counting, historical research, interviews, among others. Therefore, it also offers a critique to unidimensional methods of analysing public life. Drawing from Setha Low’s and other scholars’ research on public life and agency in public space, the following document suggest public space is not only produced by those who envision it, but also constructed by those who use it, through daily processes, behaviours, and habits. These observed patterns carry significance as they forge the character of a place, and address practices and emotions within a collective identity. The thesis also emphasises on the potential these neighbourhood centres have for becoming hubs of inclusion, and the importance of spatial morphology for this matter. La inclusión social es parte fundamental de la visión de ciudad de la municipalidad de Estocolmo para el año 2040, debido a la gran brecha socioeconómica que existe entre las áreas centrales de la ciudad y sus suburbios. El presente estudio se enfoca en los tres suburbios más estigmatizados de Estocolmo, de población predominantemente inmigrante, ofreciendo una manera alternativa de entender la inclusión, estudiando los espacios públicos centrales de estos barrios a través de un análisis comparativo y metodológicamente diverso, de la vida urbana de estas áreas y su relación con la morfología del espacio que la sustenta. El proyecto busca evidenciar la importancia de estos ‘centrums’ como soportes de la vida comunitaria en los suburbios, a través de diferentes capas de análisis, de lo objetivo a lo subjetivo, como el análisis espacial, la observación directa y el conteo de personas, la investigación histórica y las entrevistas, entre otros. Así, se ofrece también una crítica a los métodos unidimensionales de estudio de la vida urbana. Inspirándose en el trabajo teórico de diferentes académicos alrededor del espacio público y la agencia, el trabajo sugiere que el espacio público no solo es producido por aquellos que lo conciben, sino que también es construido por quienes lo viven, a través de procesos, comportamientos y hábitos cotidianos. Estos patrones son significativos, pues forjan el carácter de un lugar y las prácticas y emociones de una identidad colectiva.
