The Influence of Courtyards. Thermal Comfort Study in Bogotá, Colombia

In the last twenty years, a decrease in quality of social housing projects in Bogotá has been associated with cold related sickness of residents particularly children and seniors. As the Colombian government is not anymore the main agent in social housing, quality standards are in charge of private developers that control the market. In this context, business profitability has played against healthy indoor environments. Without local ordinances on thermal standards, it has been assumed that Bogotá’s climate does not have serious complications to achieve indoor thermal comfort undermining the visibility of the problem. Previous investigations on thermal comfort in the city have focused on the interaction between the local climate and a particular building configuration, but have disregarded the study of the occupant’s perception. This dissertation aims to understand thermal distress investigating the variation of environmental and personal parameters across time. It also investigates the influence of urban form into these parameters. If a residential building has a bad thermal performance related to its urban settings, improvements will be more complicated or almost impossible to achieve on it because of the complexity and cost of intervening the urban structure. Inappropriate urban configurations could avoid people of getting natural light benefits undermining the potential of solar heat gains in this location. The hypothesis is that an urban fabric that enhances solar access will improve the potential of a building to deliver a satisfactory thermal comfort to its occupants and energy savings in electric lighting. To test this hypothesis, courtyard buildings are explored as a way to connect people with the daily rhythms on their environments and reinterpret these spaces in the scenario of a larger and a denser city. Resumen: En los últimos veinte años, una reducción en la calidad de la vivienda social en Bogotá ha estado asociada con enfermedades invernales en residentes, particularmente niños y adultos mayores. Como el gobierno colombiano no es ya el agente principal en vivienda social, los estándares de calidad están a cargo de desarrolladores privados que controlan el mercado. En este contexto, el modelo de rentabilidad ha jugado en contra de ambientes interiores saludables. Sin mayores regulaciones locales en estándares térmicos, se asume que el clima Bogotano no presenta complicaciones serias para lograr condiciones de confort térmico interior, lo que oculta este problema. Investigaciones previas sobre confort térmico en la ciudad se han enfocado en la interacción entre el clima local y las tipologías residenciales pero han desatendido el estudio de la percepción en los ocupantes. Esta disertación pretende entender el estrés térmico investigando la variación en parámetros ambientales y personales en el tiempo. Asimismo, investiga la influencia de la forma urbana en dichos parámetros. Si un edificio residencial tiene un mal desempeño térmico debido a su configuración urbana, mejorar sus condiciones será más complicado o casi imposible de lograr en este por la complejidad y el costo de intervenir la estructura urbana. Configuraciones urbanas inapropiadas puede llegar a evitar a la gente el acceso a los beneficios de la luz natural reduciendo el potencial de ganancias solares en esta locación. La hipótesis es que un trazado urbano que promueve el acceso solar mejorará el potencial de una edificación para proporcionar un confort térmico satisfactorio a sus ocupantes y un ahorro energético en luz eléctrica.
