The author of the present study examines the territorial authority of the palatine (Latin: comes palatínus, Hungarian: nádorispán) between 1205 and 1248. The palatine was the highest secular judge after the king in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. The author sets out from the example of Roland. Roland was palatine and comes (Hungarian: ispán , 'local lord', i.e. royal governor) of Pozsony county (Hungarian: megye) between 1248 and 1260. His activity mainly focused on the north-western area of the realm, where he held the office of comes comitatus Posoniensis.
