This article collects and summarizes the most important results and publications on the history of the Carthusian order in the medieval Hungarian Kingdom. The Carthusian order did not have a big community in Hungary, it had only four monasteries during the middle ages. Despite the small number of the monasteries, the order had international relations. The first attempt at settlement was in 1238, when the former Benedectine monastery on the island of Ercsi was donated to the Carthusians. Probably due to the Tatarian invasion the order left Hungary, because in 1253 Pope Innocent IV charged the abbey of the Cistercian monastery in Toplica to populate Ercsi.
