It is a cliché of history that Hungary, in the wake of WWI and the Treaty of Trianon, could depend on Germany only in her pursuit of territorial revision. Thus the road had already been paved for the Hungarians to side with Germany, initially as an ally and later as a satellite state, in the tragic events of WWII. Far fewer people are aware, however, that Hungarian hopes rested on an utter illusion, even though the historical literature makes it evident.
