An investigation of the characteristics and functions of band parent support of high school bands in Nebraska.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics and functions of band parent support in high school bands in the state of Nebraska. The subjects were randomly selected band directors (N=80) and their respective parent representatives or band booster presidents (N=61). The investigation utilized a twenty­ eight statement survey to elicit information regarding the perceptions and roles of parent support of high school bands. Non-parametric statistics utilizing chi square procedures were used to analyze the data with the alpha level set at p \u3c.05. The results indicated directors and parents perceived one of the main functions of parental support was the promotion of music in the schools. Parents and directors were undecided that fund raising was the main function of parent support. In addition, most of the participating programs have parent organizations that have been in existence for a long period of time. Parents and directors agreed with statements regarding the effect of parent influence on school administration support and students\u27 success in the program, and also in their interpretation concerning the purpose of fund raising.
