21st Century Saree -- Mermaid Style

The purpose of this project was to design a dress out of paper using one of the pleating styles we learned in our ADM 313 course. Our main concept was to make a culturally accepted modern day wedding dress. Saree’s are very popular around the world in Nepali, India, and Hindu cultures. We wanted to bring to life a modern-day version of a wedding dress that would be culturized as part of their fashion. We started out using white mandala theme paper for the print of the dress on the main body. We then added a seashell accent to the bust using an accordion pleating style. After completing the dress base, we started working on the belt and the achal, which is a common trait on wedding dresses for these cultures. When making the belt we decided to braid three pieces of tulle together and then puffed it out to make it look wider. Then we threaded the “achal” wrap through the braid under the seashell in order to get the side poof to look like sea foam. Afterwards, we made the tail to the dress by accordion pleating every piece individually until we got the look of seashells trailing to the ground. This paper dress design will shine in a way that says this bride is transforming straight out of a fairytale, from a tail to legs, on her wedding day.
