This paper examines the characteristics of Finnish computerisation as experienced by the Finnish citizens. The main questions focus on the ways in which ordinary citizens are using information technologies and how they are experiencing the development of the information society. According to empirical data, the significance of local cultures and ways ofeveiyday life remain largely unchanged. The information society is realised through the incorporation of digital technologies, such as the computer and the mobile phone, into work practices.
