Impact of access to formal microcredit on the agricultural productivity of small and medium producers in Peru for 2017

Este documento investiga el impacto del acceso al microcrédito formal en la productividad agrícola. El estudio utiliza datos recolectados de la Encuesta Nacional Agropecuaria, con una muestra de 12 078 observaciones. Las agencias formales que otorgan el crédito formal para este estudio, están representadas por AGROBANCO, caja rural, caja municipal, Banco privado, ONG, programas del Estado, Cooperativa y EDPYME. Por otro lado, la productividad se define como el valor de la producción agrícola en soles entre la superficie por hectárea. Este estudio, también analizó las determinantes del acceso al microcrédito formal, teniendo como resultado que las variables socioeconómicas como la educación y el idioma salen significativas al momento de estimar el modelo Probit. Asimismo, el número de parcelas y el crédito que se destina para comprar una maquinaria tienen un impacto positivo en el acceso al crédito. Esta investigación utilizó el modelo Heckman para determinar si el análisis de estudio presenta sesgo de selección. Al realizar el test de lambda, se corroboró que el modelo no presentaba sesgo. Y por ello, se continuo el análisis con un método de OLS, donde se observó que la regresión lineal presentaba heterocedasticidad, pero esto se logró corregir con el comando vce. Como resultado, se obtuvo que el crédito formal toma un valor P de 0.01, que muestra la significancia de esta variable. En conclusión, el crédito es un factor importante que impacta de manera positiva a la productividad agrícola. Finalmente, este estudio recomienda llevar a cabo estrategias para ofrecer programas de capacitación financiera a los productores agrícolas.This document investigates the impact of access to formal microcredit on agricultural productivity. The study uses data collected from the National Agricultural Survey, with a sample of 12 078 observations. The formal agencies that grant the formal credit for this study are represented by AGROBANCO, rural box, municipal bank, private bank, NGOs, State programs, Cooperative and EDPYME. On the other hand, productivity is defined as the value of agricultural production in soles between the area per hectare. This study also analyzed the determinants of access to formal microcredit, resulting in socioeconomic variables such as education and language being significant when estimating the Probit model. Likewise, the number of parcels and the credit that is destined to buy a machinery have a positive impact on access to credit. This research used the Heckman model to determine if the study analysis presents selection bias. When performing the lambda test, it was confirmed that the model did not show bias. And therefore, the analysis was continued with an OLS method, where it was observed that the linear regression presented heteroscedasticity, but this was corrected with the vce command. As a result, it was obtained that the formal credit takes a P value of 0.01, which shows the significance of this variable. In conclusion, credit is an important factor that positively impacts agricultural productivity. Finally, this study recommends carrying out strategies to offer financial training programs to agricultural producers.Trabajo de investigació
