Norms in flexible overtime for carriers’ workers. : A qualitative study where norms form flexible overtime, which is analyzed in the economic sector of career workers.

The purpose of this study is to examine employees in the economic sector who are in the career's life-mode. Furthermore, this essay examines what the employees experience as the leading norms of flexible overtime. Is has become increasingly common to work flexible overtime, especially of economy-related jobs in the Swedish working market. This leads to the background of this study, which states that the employee does more work-related tasks in comparison to if the employee did not have the possibility to work flexible overtime. With this knowledge, the study focuses on the understanding of the employees’ impulsions to make the choice to work overtime even though it is not a requirement. The methodological approach was established by semi-structured interviews, where nine employees have been participating in the study. It has been a mix of both men and women, with a delimitation where the interviewee has an employment within various economic-related tasks and possesses experience in that area for at least ten years. Furthermore, the theoretical approach has been beneficial. In the theoretical approach, the study has utilized Jakobsen and Goffman in order to understand the impulsions of working flexible overtime. Our research concluded that there are both gender neutral norms but also gender specific norms where the mutual norms deal with consideration and the pursuit of deadlines. Finally, the gender specific norms portray that women tend to be more caretaking than men, while men strive to a higher degree towards development
