To use yourself as a professional instrument : A qualitative study regarding counselors work with adolescence sexuality

The aim of this study is to understand how counsellors working in youth clinics use their professional role in conversations with youths regarding questions about sexuality and pornography, as well as how sexuality in relation to pornography is constructed in the meeting between the counsellor and the youth. Our chosen method for gathering our empirical material was semistructured interviews held with counsellors working in youth clinics. The gathered material was analyzed using the theory about sexual scripts as well as previous studies. Based on our respondents’ answers from the interviews we gathered that counsellors generally have a lack of methods as well as a universal approach when meeting the youths. Furthermore, the counsellors imply that they try to avoid letting their own values and opinions influence the meeting with the youth. Our conclusion is that more research on the counsellors professional role could contribute to more support and a clearer approach for the counsellor to rely on
