Based on information obtained from the 1982 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), in 1982 there were approximately 5.8 million persons in the civilian noninstitutionalized population of the United States with known diabetes\u2014a rate of 25.4 known diabetics per 1,000 population. Because these 1982 NHIS estimates of known diabetes are based only on a one-sixth subsample, this report presents more detailed information on the prevalence, impact, and demography of known diabetes in the United States based on three one-third sub-samples of the NHIS sample for whom diabetes information was collected during the 1979-81 time period.
