Three-phase photovoltaic systems with reactive compensation, internal energy storage and virtual inertia

Due to the increasing demand for energy, as well as the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to the increase of the greenhouse effect, the use of generation supplied by unconventional renewable sources, in order to maintain the reliability of the electrical system, has been noticeably increasing. Systems such as wind farms, solar farms and photovoltaic distributed generation, have been playing an important role in the Brazilian energy matrix because they are renewable sources of low environmental impact and have great unexplored potential in the country. However, these sources of energy considered as unconventional are characterized as intermittent sources as they depend heavily on weather conditions (wind and irradiance). Given this situation, battery energy storage systems have gained prominence for circumventing this limitation and providing other possibilities for the connection network. In this context, this thesis will model a photovoltaic generation system and evaluate the connection of this generation arrangement to the grid together with energy storage, in order to strengthen the voltage and frequency stability. The batteries will be used in the DC bus between the boost converter and the photovoltaic inverter. Therefore, a hybrid converter will be used to connect the battery bank to the DC bus. This thesis will also present a proposal to modify the control structures of a photovoltaic generation system, using the concept of virtual synchronous machine, to realize the effective control of the power flow and to contribute to voltage and frequency stability at coupling point. In addition, studies focusing on distributed photovoltaic generation with storage will be addressed, considering the impacts of this generation on the grid, regarding the effects of harmonic distortion, power factor and load relief.FAPEMIG - Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas GeraisTese (Doutorado)Em virtude do crescente aumento da demanda de energia, bem como a necessidade de diminuição de emissão de gases que contribuem com o aumento do efeito estufa, o uso de geração suprida por fontes renováveis não convencionais, com o intuito de manter a confiabilidade do sistema elétrico, vem notadamente aumentando. Sistemas como parques eólicos, fazendas solares e geração distribuída fotovoltaica, vêm ganhando importante papel na matriz energética brasileira por serem fontes renováveis de baixo impacto ambiental e por possuírem um grande potencial ainda não explorado no país. No entanto, estas fontes de energia tidas como não convencionais são caracterizadas como fontes intermitentes, pois dependem fortemente das condições meteorológicas (vento e irradiância). Diante desta conjuntura, os sistemas armazenadores de energia por baterias têm ganhado destaques por contornar esta limitação e prover outras possibilidades à rede de conexão. Neste contexto, esta tese irá modelar um sistema de geração fotovoltaica e avaliar a conexão deste arranjo de geração à rede em conjunto com armazenadores de energia, tendo em vista o fortalecimento da estabilidade de tensão e frequência. O emprego das baterias dar-se-á no barramento de corrente contínua (CC) entre o conversor boost e o inversor fotovoltaico. Sendo assim, um conversor híbrido será utilizado para conectar o banco de baterias ao barramento CC. Esta tese também irá apresentar uma proposta de modificação das estruturas de controle de um sistema de geração fotovoltaica, utilizando o conceito de máquina síncrona virtual, para realização do controle efetivo do fluxo de potência e contribuir para estabilidade de tensão e da frequência do ponto de acoplamento. Complementarmente, serão abordados estudos voltados à geração distribuída fotovoltaica com armazenamento, considerando os impactos desta geração na rede, no que tange aos efeitos da distorção harmônica, fator de potência e o alívio de carregamento
